Lake County Star Crown Point, Indiana, Friday July 26 1912. Death of a Veteran---Abel Sowards The sudden death of Abel Sowards, at his home on North Street, last Saturday at Midnight, caused the second vacancy in the G.A.R. ranks here in four days. Although he had not been feeling as well as usual for a short time he walked to the postoffice [sic] and back Saturday morning. His heart was not doing as well as usual, and that night he became sick to his stomach about midnight and before his wife had a chance to realize the change he expired. His health had been frail for a long time, and his poor eye sight had given him a dollar a day pension for a number of years. Mr. Sowards served three years in the 5th Virginia Infantry, and at the time the war broke out was living near the Ohio and Virginia line. He was born 70 years ago the 30th day of May, a little north of the "letter S" at the old Foley mill pond where "King's Run" emptied into the pond and the marks of the old pioneer log house still shows on the edge of the hill. After the war he drifted back to Lake county and for many years lived at Leroy and near there before coming to Crown Point. Surviving is a wife, several children, and grandchildren. It was his wish to be buried by his comrades of the G.A.R. Post, and on Tuesday forenoon a squad of soldiers and the family members started for the Salem church and cemetery, in Porter county, where the services were held by Rev. Billman, of this place and the body was laid to rest with the other family members where he had erected a fine monument. He answered to the final roll call and joined a much larger army across the river than is left on this side.

Source: Catherine M Aiken Death record As you'll note all of the info comes from two death records which contain info from the same informant, so take it with any many grains as you'd like. I haven't done much work on this line yet to find additional sources. Also, you'll note they died on the same day. That is not a typo, that is correct - they died less than 5 hours apart. Regarding hosting a website - yes, I'd love more info regarding a host and other details. Thanks for the offer to grant my posting access to your tree. I will definitely keep that in mind. My hope is to have my own site, but if that proves too difficult, I may take you up on it! Mike
